SAFC Community Programs and Initiatives
The Panthers are always out and about in the community representing the Club and connecting our vision and mission of "For Club and Community" with pride and passion!
McHappy Day - Saturday 17th October
McHappy Day was a terrific start to the summer of fun with Brad Crabb, Jaidan Kappler, Brett Eddy, Tom Jolly, Brody Virgo, Connor Fairlie, Liam Fitt, Ben Millman and Ryan Jeffries, bringing some much needed help to local McDonald's restaurants. The players served and mingled with customers and helped to raise much needed funds for the McHappy Day initiative!
City of Onkaparinga Christmas Pageant - Sunday 29th November
From there we shifted our focus to the City of Onkaparinga Christmas Pageant. It was great to see representatives from our girls, juniors and seniors teams, as well as coaches, board members and staff all walk the parade, giving out merchandise and saying hello to all the families lining Beach Road. Kingston the Panther was the star of the show aloft the Cathie Peters Good Guys Noarlunga ute, waving the flag! (We think he may have scared a few kids, but the Panthers are to be feared - WE LOVE THAT!)
It was a great day that saw South Adelaide Football Club given the award for 'Best Representation of the Whole City' by Mayor Lorraine Rosenberg.
Southern Community Christmas Carols - Sunday 13th December
The Panther Club once again did an excellent job of coordinating the Southern Community Christmas Carols and the senior playing group had a great time running a kids footy clinic prior to the commencement of the evenings entertainment. It was a great chance for young Panthers fans to meet the players and improve their football skills in a fun and friendly environment.
Panthers Big Backyard - December - February
Friday 11th December saw the launch of the Panthers Big Backyard, which saw us open the gates and oval to the entire community for a range of fun, family friendly activities, all concentrating on health and wellbeing, lifestyle and fitness.
The idea of the event is to give families and friends in the southern commmunity somewhere safe and welcoming to go and help inspire and achieve positive social engagement. Get everyone off their 'devices' and enjoy the open air!
Our first event was a great success with around 60 people attending over the 2 hour period between 6.00pm 8.00pm and Senior Players Roland Ah Chee and Ben Darrou joining in on the AFL 9s and the cracking game of 'backyard cricket' that lasted over two hours! Flinders University students Josh and Viv were an instrumental part in helping coordinate the activities, with bocce and Frisbee also popular on the night.
The free sausage sizzle was a winner too! Although our second Panthers Big Backyard scheduled on the 29th January was a wash-out, but our third and final event for the summer on Friday 19th February was another success with another cracking game of cricket, featuring senior coach Brad Gotch opening the bowling, and the entire playing group hanging around after training to enjoy the fresh air, games and facilities.
We hope to continue the initiative next summer and continue to offer these community events in order for the club to move closer to a stronger connectivity with the southern communities and our passionate Panther supporters.
Colonnades Blitz - Saturday 13th February
The Colonnades Blitz saw the Panthers take over the bustling shopping centre and engaging with supporters and the community. Nine senior players attended, as well as Senior Coach, Brad Gotch, SAFC Women's Ambassador, Amelia Mulcahy and players from our junior girls and boys teams. It was a busy day and we talked to hundreds of shoppers, gave out merchandise and the cheerleaders entertained the crowds with their energetic 'flash mob' performances throughout the day.
Leukaemia Foundation Southern Support Groups - Ongoing
As part of our commitment to the Leukaemia Foundation as our Major Charity Partner we have created a strong relationship to enable us to contribute to the Foundation's 'Vision to Cure and Mission to Care'.
Since June 2015, South Adelaide Football Club has been hosting monthly the Leukaemia Foundation's Patient Support Group for the southern region with many patients and families attending and making use of our facilities at the Club. The group again kicked off in February 2016 for an entire program of meetings scheduled monthly for the year.
Panthers Family Fun Day/Season Launch - Sunday 20th March
The Panthers Family Fun Day is knocking on our door and we are preparing to launch Season 2016 with a bang at Hickinbotham Oval! For the first time the club will be opening our Season Launch to the general public and are inviting all Panthers supporters to attend. There will be a Kids Footy Clinic in the morning, live music playing throughout the day, interviews with players and coaches, fun and games around the oval, food and drink, the chance to meet current and former Panthers stars at our guernsey presentations and players, coaches, staff and volunteers participating in the World's Greatest Shave to help raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.
We are also involved with many planned community activations with Flinders University, including hosting Health and Well-being seminars for families in the southern districts, participating at Flinders 'O' Week and many more events throughout the year!
Kids Football Clinics
We are also planning two kid's footy clinics here at the Club over the school holidays in April and July and also bringing the clinics out to schools in the region. Stay tuned closer to the dates for full information.
Connecting our community to the club has never been more important! We want to highlight health and wellbeing, active lifestyles and a safe and welcoming environment for families to enjoy much needed time together.
We'd like to thank our players, families, volunteers, sponsors and all who have participated and helped to create these events. Together we can achieve great things both on and off the field in 2016! We have much to celebrate too our 140th Jubilee calendar is full with loads of things we can look forward to BRING ON THE FOOTY!
Yours in Panther pride,
Business and Community Relations Manager
