Match Report

It was a disappointing end to a game of football but the players did show a lot more resilience after a poor performance 2 weeks ago.

There were a lot more contributors this week with Joel Cross leading the way with a strong onball effort.

He was well supported by Keegan Brooksby and Nick Liddle around the ball too.

It was a little more pleasing to see our backline defend better but we do believe there is improvement to come with some quicker and more efficient ball use.

Congratulations to Josh Giddings on his first league game and he did ok in defence too but would have learnt a lot from the experience.

Nathan Daniel and Todd McKay also had their moments back as well as Brad Crabb defending more strongly which was something for him to build on now.

As I said there were more contributors and we had our fair share of the possessions but just we can move the ball better.

This and other things are what we will continue to work on with Central our next challenge at home on Saturday.

Match Report

South’s Reserves were overrun by Norwood at Hickinbotham Oval on Saturday night. A seven goal first term gave the Panthers a 28 point lead at the first break, which was maintained at half time with an even second term. However, in the last half the Redlegs kicked eight goals to two to run out seven point winners.

Disappointingly, the Panthers had several chances to put the game beyond the Redlegs reach in the final term, but poor kicking for goal or decision making would prove costly.

Midfielder Nic Schwarz continued his solid run of form gathering 28 possessions, including 15 clearances. He took advantage of Ben Dowdell’s dominance in the ruck (41 hit outs). Dowdell also picked-up 12 possessions and kicked two goals. On-baller Mitch Parr put in his best game at the level with 25 possessions and two goals.

Defender Tom Fields responded well to his omission from the League team to provide plenty of drive off half back with 15 kicks and 7 handballs.

Match Report

It was great to see the u18s finally get reward for effort on Saturday with our win against Norwood. Seeing the players, coaches and support staff belting out the club song was also really enjoyable. The players had really set themselves for this game after a disappointing performance against the eagles before the bye. It was clear early in the game the boys had come to play with the required intensity and effort. Despite the win, players and coaches agreed after the game that we still have certain parts of our play that we need to fine tune if we are to continue to improve as a team and get to where we want to be. To the oppositions credit they really came out after half time and lifted their intensity and took control of the game. The most pleasing aspect for me from the game was the spirit and character the playing group showed in the last quarter after being challenged at 3/4 time. The players really had to dig deep to regain control of the game. To make the win even more enjoyable we had 2 players play their first game for our club, congratulations to Keegan Sperling and Blake Somerville. We had many good players but special mention to Michael Ross who kicked 7 goals, Matt Dominish who continues to improve each week, Lochie Hartshorne who rebounded well out of the back half, Luke Bartlett played a really important role and forced many contests in our favour and hard working Mids Jake Anderson and Caleb Daniel who have both had good years so far.

On a sad note, the SAFC community lost a great man in Larry Feckner last week. Larry was a member of the junior support staff in recent years and from all reports was a very close friend of many of our players and staff. Some of our players were quite emotional after the game. We send our condolences to his family at this sad time.

We travel north to play Centrals this week and expect nothing less than another win.
