South Adelaide Reserves come from behind to beat the third-placed Double Blues by five points at Peter Motley Oval on Saturday.

The Panthers booted two late goals in quick succession to claim their biggest scalp of the season, knocking off the Double Blues in a gutsy 10.8 (68) to 9.9 (63) win.

Tom Whittlesea was dangerous up forward for the blue and white as he finished the match with four goals. Also impressive was Lee Hoey and Cooper Machin.

The Reserves, who were bolstered by several returning players such as Malcolm Karpany and Ben Haren managed to match it with the home side and went into the first break tied at 2.2 (14) each.

But the second term would see the Double Blues take the lead, booting two goals, while the Panthers only managed one goal and four behinds. But South made up for it during the third term as the side combined for five, third quarter goals.

Sturt pushed for a late goal in the dying stages of the third term, but some desperate defending by the Panthers managed to hold them off just long enough for the siren to signal the final break at which point they held a narrow one goal lead.

But the final term would see the home side boot two unanswered goals to snatch the lead from the Panthers but the boys in the blue and white refused to go down without a fight.

With just six minutes to play, some great forward pressure by the Panthers allowed Tarik Illingworth a clear shot on goal to cut the deficit to just two points. The Panthers then cleared it straight out of the centre, and eventually hit up the dangerous Whittlesea, who took a strong contested mark dead in front to hand the Panthers a four-point lead.

South Adelaide almost managed to kick another goal within the dying seconds but just missed to the far side, but by then the 10.8 (68) to 9.9 (63) win was sealed.

South Adelaide Reserves will now look towards West Adelaide, and they will clash with the Bloods at Hisense Stadium on Friday September 11, from 4:50pm.
