2024 San Remo & Marc Makrid Scholarship Recipients

21 December 2023

South Adelaide announces the 2024 recipients of the San Remo and Marc Makrid Scholarships for aspiring footballers.

Three aspiring South Adelaide Football Club junior footballers are the beneficiaries of the 2024 San Remo and Marc Makrid Scholarships.

2023 Under-18 Premiership Player Benny Barrett and 2021 Women's Leading Goalkicker Shae Archbold were announced as the San Remo scholarship recipients.

Kangaroo Island product and Under-16 player Cain Florance was awarded the Marc Makrid Scholarship.

The South Adelaide scholarship program has been running since 2021 where Jason Horne-Francis and Gypsy Schirmer were the inaugural recipients. David Crotti of San Remo has been joined by Marc Makrid of Makrid Associates in providing $15,000 worth of scholarships for South Adelaide footballers.

The San Remo and Marc Makrid Scholarships, to the value of $5000 each, will greatly assist the three footballers from the zone with the financial assistance to support their physical preparation for the season with areas such as strength and conditioning, medical and physio, on-field equipment (boots, runners etc) and any technology needs that might aid their development.

This week Benny, Shae and Cain were able to enjoy a lunch at Jimmy Deane’s and meet David Crotti and Marc Makrid and thank them for their generous support.

"We're extremely grateful to David Crotti and Marc Makrid" said South Adelaide CEO Neill Sharpe

"David and Marc are strong on the need for South Adelaide to develop young footballers from our community and giving them the best chance to succeed.

"This is a significant initiative that is having a positive impact for these young people and their families.

"These scholarships will greatly assist Benny, Shae and Cain prepare the best they can for next season, and significantly help with their football journey."

Positively this week the last two female San Remo Scholarship recipients in Brooke Boileau and Alissa Brook were drafted to the AFLW joining the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide respectively.

“This is a great example of providing young footballers with the best chance to succeed,” said Neill Sharpe.

“Brooke and Alissa were very driven on getting the best out of their football and I know the scholarship greatly assisted them in achieving that.”

“Having partners such as David Crotti from San Remo and Marc Makrid supporting us in female football is so critical to our program given we receive no financial support from the AFL despite having 16 players drafted to the AFLW since 2018.”
