South Adelaide suffered a heartbreaking one-point defeat to Woodville-West Torrens after a tense second half at the neutral venue of Richmond Oval during Energised Round.

The Panthers’ preparations were disrupted by multiple forced changes, with Layla Vizgaudis, Doreena Hansen and Nicole Campbell all withdrawn from the game.

Much like the reverse fixture earlier in the season, Eagles forward and SANFLW leading goal kicker Klaudia O'Neill threatened to take over early, kicking her side's opening two goals.

Jaidee-Lee Shortridge toed through the Panthers’ first, but concerns emerged for Mel Anderson, who worryingly went down and was stretchered from the field in amongst a group of players around the ball.

Anderson didn’t return to the action, leaving South Adelaide down a player on the bench only five minutes into the first quarter.

A strong overhead mark from captain Tiff King got play moving for Caitlin Couch to gather possession.

Her searching kick found Shortridge, who produced a wonderful snap while showing great poise with her back turned to goal.

Further into time on, Olivia Evans cut off two Eagles kicks in the forward half, surging ahead to put the Panthers in front to end an entertaining quarter.

The momentum carried on after the break, as Emma Charlton threw one on the boot to get on the board.

Hope Taylor burst through the stoppage to break away from the Eagles defence, creating something out of nothing for returning forward Chanel May to extend the lead to 18 points.

But as the game wore on, and with the Panthers made to play a rotation down, Woodville-West Torrens sensed they were still firmly in reach.

The margin was trimmed to 5 by the main change and would stay within one goal for the entire second half.

Scoring slowed, but the Eagles would find the go ahead goal in the fourth quarter through Brianna Walling.

A downfield free kick gave Nikki Nield a late opportunity, but she couldn’t make the distance, with the resulting rushed behind bringing the game level.

The Panthers were unable to relieve the mounting pressure in their defensive half, as the Eagles drove through a behind that ultimately sealed the win.

Nield finished with 21 disposals, 13 tackles and six clearances, while Charlton was damaging with 17 disposals, 14 tackles and a goal.

Couch put her head down in the stoppages to pick up 16 disposals, eight tackles and five inside 50s.

Shortridge continued her solid debut season, kicking the first two goals for the blue and white.

Falling outside the top four, South Adelaide now faces a must-win clash in their last home game of the season. The Panthers will take on the fourth-placed Roosters at Magain Stadium on Sunday, 2^nd August at 12:00pm.
