Panthers Put Away West Adelaide in First Nations Round
South Adelaide has downed West Adelaide to the tune of 61 points at Magain Stadium, following a venue relocation caused by severe flooding damage to Richmond Oval the weekend prior.
Blackwood's Lily Dunstall-Bruce (#138) made her debut in the blue and white during the game.
Nine unanswered goals over three quarters began with Melissa Anderson, who continued her habit of early goals after Layla Vizgaudis spotted her at the top of the square.
Vizgaudis would also set up the second, finding Hope Taylor who snuck into space. The gameplan persistently attacked the corridor, with the Bloods unable to hold off a potent Panthers forward line.
The ball winners received first-class service from Soriah Moon, who was undeniable in the ruck. This allowed the Panthers to control territory and dictate play on their terms.
South Adelaide’s defence was equally composed, with intercept possessions and disciplined positioning ensuring West Adelaide had limited access going forward.
Proudly wearing the Pinktails First Nations jumper that she had designed herself, Doreena Hansen found space for a shot on goal after using her body cleverly in the ground ball contest.
Olivia Evans wrapped up her opponent and hit up Emily Brockhurst out the back, but she missed to the right.
Holly Ifould effectively drifted off packs to gather the ball cleanly by hand, proving influential as she linked up with Evans for another major.
Hansen and Vizgaudis would put the Panthers even further in front, before the team took the ball the length of the field, Brockhurst and Evans combining brilliantly by hand along the far side wing, but it resulted in a behind. It brought about a close to a professional first half performance where the Bloods were held scoreless.
Out of the main break, South Adelaide’s forward entries didn’t let up, but were of lower quality, which allowed West Adelaide to cut kicks off.
Taylor was made to work for her second goal, winning a free kick at the mouth of goal as she simply guided it through.
West Adelaide opened its account midway through the third quarter with a missed snap from Sarah Campbell deep in the pocket, but Anderson hit back immediately after being found over the top by Hansen.
In every aspect of the game, the Panthers were cruising to take a 55-1 lead into the last.
Hansen made an immediate impact to start the fourth quarter, who cleanly gathered a loose ball from a scrappy contest and slotted the goal from a difficult angle.
The Bloods eventually broke through for their first goal in the final term, but Taylor responded with her third as the result played out as anticipated.
Vizgaudis led the midfield group, picking up a game-high 32 disposals, seven clearances and six inside 50s to go with a goal. She was well supported by Emma Charlton, who applied the pressure with 22 disposals, as well as ten tackles and ten clearances.
Evans and Ifould were the main playmakers with their work on the outside, while Anderson was often the last link in the chain with ten marks and two goals.
Taylor and Hansen were lethal in front of the sticks, ending with three goals each.
South Adelaide will now host the unbeaten Woodville-West Torrens in a top two clash in Round 6, with the game moved to Magain Stadium on Saturday, 30th May at 12:00pm.
