Redlegs Get Over the Line Despite Inaccuracy

South Adelaide trailed at each break as they weren’t able to get into the contest, Norwood coming home with a 17-point win at Revo Fitness Oval.

Amongst a heavily rotated side with the U18 National Championships now underway, Cove’s Alexis Harvey (#140) was handed her Panthers debut. Mel Anderson also celebrated her 50th SANFLW League game.

Norwood got on top early as the Panthers continued their unfortunate trend of slow starts, all the scoring done down the red and blue end.

They didn’t pull too far in front however, registering 1.3 with the Redlegs’ Mykaela Walker the only goal kicker.

After a wasteful first quarter, Kate Alexander responded with two quick goals after the break, forcing South Adelaide onto the back foot yet again.

With ground to make up, it started promisingly as Kate Chapman made her set shot work back after winning a favourable free kick.

Missing the big ball winners, it was up to the outside runners to generate scores, led by Olivia Evans and Anderson in the forward half.

A good patch from the Panthers ended with Madison Brown sending the ball towards the pocket, where Anderson was left unmarked. She made the most of the chance, converting the goal in her milestone game.

Their hard work helped claw back Alexander’s double, but South Adelaide still lost the quarter and went into half-time trailing by 10 points.

The third quarter mirrored the first, with the Panthers going scoreless and Norwood adding just one goal from a host of opportunities.

Soriah Moon enjoyed the better of the ruck battle, but the below strength midfield group often struggled to secure first possession. Esther Schirmer worked hard to combat the opposition’s stoppage dominance.

Six behinds in a row from the Redlegs were proceeded with a behind from Doreena Hansen, who tried to work the angle after smothering the ball on the mark.

Moon’s ruck work led to a clearance from her own boot shortly after, with Jaidee-Lee Shortridge finishing the move with a goal, though it only served to make the scoreboard look more respectable.

Shortridge had proven in her first two League games that she didn’t need much of the ball to make an impact, having kicked a goal in each.

Moon put the team on her back for the afternoon, ending the game with 19 disposals, 11 tackles, eight clearances and 41 hitouts.

Anderson was chaired off the field in her 50th game, digging in with 12 tackles and a goal.

Charlotte Dolan operated between both arcs, picking up 13 disposals and four marks, while Evans applied the pressure ahead of the ball with 16 disposals, seven tackles and three inside 50s.

Chapman was among the three goal kickers, while Harvey on debut got stuck in with eight tackles.

South Adelaide sits equal second on the ladder, with the gap to the top-placed Eagles widening, but the Panthers will aim to close it when they travel to Thomas Farms Oval to face Sturt in Round 9 on Saturday, 27th June at 2:50pm.
