The Young Panthers Outclassed by Sturt

After a nailbiter in the round one contest against Adelaide the spirits within the league side were high, knowing they could keep up with a solid squad.

In round 2 the boys were faced against Sturt, and it was set to be a great contest at Flinders University Stadium.

It was a less than ideal start in the first term as Sturt would supply a major straight out the gate, making the league side wake up and kick into gear.

Both sides would then struggle to get away from each other as the tension between the two sides was high.

The contested ball was fierce, and it was going to come down to who wanted it more.

It was a brawl until Sturt would again kick a major and really dampen the mood of the league side.

Placing the Panthers down by 13-points headed into the second term.

During the second quarter Sturt began to kick away. It was clear that the league side were going to have to battle hard to stay in this contest.

Eamon Wilkinson was able to provide the only major for the league side late in the quarter. His set shot from 25-metres out after a strong grab was smooth as silk.

Hayden Sampson was everywhere in the first half, and he would continue this form all throughout the contest. Ending with a team high 34 disposals.

Down by 31-points at the half the signs were there for the league side as they had passages of clean football, it was a matter of hitting the scoreboard and locking up across the ground.

Oliver Davis would get the boys up and about early in the third quarter with his first major of the contest, a set shot from 50-metres out looking like it was never wavering as soon as it left the boot.

After this however it began to look dull for the Panthers as Sturt would kick four majors. Putting this contest further out of reach.

Nothing was working at the run and drive of the opposition was too much too handle.

A few promising passages wasn’t enough to get the ball back up forward into damaging areas and the league side would head into the last down by 47-points.

During the last quarter the league side put up a fight as Jake Arundell was able to hit the scoreboard with a major just after the 10-minute mark.

Sturt would slot four more goals after this event.

Wilkinson manage to get two majors during the term as he was fierce in hunting the footy, kicking a dribbling ball in from the square with two opponents on him and following with a booming kick from 50-metres out after playing on.

Davis was a warrior in this contest laying a massive 13 tackles.

Sturt were too good for the Panthers going down by 65-points.

South take on Central Districts on Saturday the 20th at Flinders University Stadium in a 1:10pm timeslot.

Facing against Sturt in round 2 the stage was set at Flinders University Stadium.

The boys came out strong in the first securing the first major of the game off of Corey Grocock’s boot, his kick from 45-metres out on the tight angle looking pure.

However, Sturt would fire away for the rest of the term as the Panthers were unable to beat the opposition to the contest.

Throughout the rest of the term Sturt would secure four majors, putting a dampener on the day.

It still had promise as when the reserves were in possession of the ball the movement by foot looked clean.

Down by 21-points headed into the second a reply was desperately needed. This did not come, and it began to look bad for the Panthers.

Sturt would keep the reserves goalless in the second term and proceeded to kick four more of their own.

Finn Emile-Brennan would mop up plenty of the ball during the game and by the end of it he ended with a team high 25 disposals.

It wasn’t looking ideal for the Panthers, being down by 44-points after a half is always a tough feat to come back from.

But in the third the boys made it a challenge for Sturt. Making sure to have pride in their defence.

The opposition would only manage to kick two majors during the third and this was a massive positive for the reserves.

Making sure to hit packs hard and provide pressure around the ground. Ethan Roberts was good at this with his team high 9 tackles.

Dylan Brown would also kick a desperately needed major late in the quarter. A disjointed play by Sturt would see him stream into an open fifty, beating his opponent and slotting his first.

The morale had slightly lifted but looking at a 50-point deficit with one quarter of football left can be tough.

Sturt would go on and put the game to bed in a big way kicking five unanswered majors in the last with South only able to supply one point.

The reserves would end up going down by 86-points.

The reserves will face Central Districts at Flinders University Stadium on Saturday the 20th in an 10:30am timeslot.
