South Adelaide unveils 2022 Indigenous Guernsey

28 June 2022

South Adelaide are proud to reveal their 2022 Ongoing Journey Guernsey.

The South Adelaide Football Club is pleased to unveil the specially designed guernsey it will wear during Indigenous Round matches against Central Districts and Glenelg in rounds 13 and 14.

For the first time, both South Adelaide League and Reserves will wear the jumper to celebrate First Nations People.

Designed by Barkindji woman Caitlyn Davies-Plummer of Dustin-Koa Art, the original painting is called "Ongoing Journey" which not only represents the journey of the football season, but the journey understanding and reconciling with First Nations communities.

Caitlyn said that she feels honoured to have designed the Panthers 2022 Ongoing Journey Guernsey.

"As someone who's always grown up around footy, the idea of seeing my designs running around the footy oval was so exciting." Said Caitlyn Davies-Plummer.

"I'm so proud to see a part of my mob represented through this guernsey and I am honoured and feel so privileged to be a part of this special round."

"Indigenous round is always my favourite time of the season and to have been able to contribute to South Adelaide's Reconciliation journey, through this jumper design is so exciting."

South Adelaide Adelaide CEO Neill Sharpe said that it's great to be able to celebrate First Nations communities through the connection with the football Club.

"We're thrilled to have Caitlyn Davies-Plummer create a real meaningful piece of art that we can proudly wear over the next two weeks" said South Adelaide CEO Neill Sharpe.

"There are many ways in which we can recognise, value and celebrate First Nation people's culture, and I feel that this certainly does that."

"Through recommendation from Hayden Sampson, we were able to have Caity design the Ongoing Journey art piece"

"Caity is a very talented artist who is extremely proud of her heritage and it's pleasing to see the final result"

The main journey line running down the jumper has diverging mountains, which not only represents a physical land element but also it is symbol for overcoming adversity.

It serves as a reminder to keep pushing even when things seem impossible.

The physical element of the mountain represents the cliffs of Moana, Seaford and the coastline around the South Adelaide Football Club.

The tidal patterns represent the ocean, which pays respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are connected to the sea.

There are other symbols throughout the Guernsey that pay respect to the language groups that are connected to the bush/land.

They show desert shrubs, a boomerang and undulating country.

On the bottom right of the jumper, there are three men, representing the three Indigenous players within the South squad, Hayden Sampson, Darnell Tucker and Kim Kantilla.

The other people around them is the rest of the team, players and coaches that will always support and uplift the Indigenous players and their families.

The u-shapes along the journey line are symbolising the player's families and other significant people in their lives that have supported them throughout pre-season and games.

There are two special stars on this painting. Stars within Dustin-Koa Art's paintings represent loved ones/spirits of ancestors watching over those still in the physical world.

One star is representing Hayden Sampson's little cousin who is in the dreaming.

She is placed his shoulder to symbolise that her spirit and light will always be with him and the family.

The second star represents a huge South Adelaide fan, Corey, who lost his brave battle with MND.
