Thank you, Sam Skinner
Former co-captain Sam Skinner announced to the playing group on Monday night that he has made the decision to retire from SANFL football, effective immediately.
Skinner suffered a fractured eye socket and concussion during the Panthers’ Round 1 match against the Eagles.
After a number of head knocks throughout his career, Skinner has been advised by medical experts to retire from SANFL football.
Skinner joined the Panthers in 2021 after being taken by the Brisbane Lions with pick 47 in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft from Newborough in Victoria and Gippsland U18. He went on to play three AFL games for the Lions, averaging one goal per game. Over his time in the SANFL, Skinner played 86 games, 72 with the Panthers kicking 34 goals.
Following an outstanding 2021 season with the Panthers, Skinner earned another AFL opportunity with Port Adelaide in 2022, playing two games for the Power before returning to Magain Stadium in 2023.
Skinner was named co captain in 2024 and 2025, before stepping down from the role in 2026.
The ultimate utility, Skinner gave the Panthers flexibility at both ends of the ground, making an impact in defence and attack. He kicked 17 goals in 2025.
Skinner said he was grateful for his time at the Panthers.
“Over the last few weeks, I’ve had a number of scans, and they’ve all looked positive, which is good." said Skinner
"Footy puts me at risk of being exposed to another concussion, and next time I may not be as fortunate.
"I haven’t really had a choice, but I’m going to put my health first and hang up the boots."
"It’s not how I pictured my career ending. I’ve been talking to Boof and Radar over the last few weeks, and they kept reiterating to me that not many people get to choose how they finish their career. When I put things into perspective, I’m very grateful for my journey."
"When I came across in 2021, it turned into the most memorable year of footy I’ve ever had. Coming off a list and into a family environment reminded me of being back home."
"Upon reflection, it became clear to me that the positives outweigh the negatives. The relationships I’ve built, the experiences I’ve had, and the knowledge I’ve gained over this journey have all played a part in shaping who I am today."
"To South Adelaide, thank you for taking Charlotte and me in. I’d like to thank Boof for getting us over to South, and I’m grateful for the love and care you’ve shown. To Sharpie and Radar, thanks for helping set me up outside of footy, and thank you to Radar for your support over the last few weeks. It’s really been appreciated."
"And to the current group, it pains me to be forced to pull the pin because I can see what we’ve got in the room right now, and it’s really exciting."
Senior Coach Jarrad Wright reflected on Skinner’s time with the Panthers.
"Sam has been such a trademark player for the side throughout his journey at the club." Said Wright
"His selflessness, leadership and fierce competitiveness on the field have not only defined him as a person, but have also helped shape the next generation of players and shown them exactly what league football is all about."
"Ever since Sam and Charlotte arrived at the club, their commitment to making South their home and helping make it a better place was immediate. They built strong connections within the club and wider South community, while also establishing their life and family here."
"Whilst it is an emotional and sad way for a career with so much more to give to come to an end, the health, wellbeing and future of life with his beautiful family must remain the priority."
"We wish Sam, Char and Ollie all the very best for what lies ahead and look forward to having them remain involved at the club as our journey continues."
The South Adelaide Football Club will continue to support Sam, Charlotte and their family, and looks forward to having them remain part of the Panthers community.
