Eamon Wilkinson to hang up the boots

Eamon Wilkinson informed the club last week that he will retire from SANFL football following Saturday’s clash against the Bloods.

Originally from Meadows, Wilkinson came through the Panthers Talent Pathway, progressing through the Development Squads before earning a place in the South Adelaide Under 16 side in 2016. He played eight games at Under 16 level before stepping up to the Under 18s later that year, where he featured in three matches.

Wilkinson continued with the Under 18s throughout 2017 and 2018 before rupturing his ACL in 2018.

After completing his rehabilitation, Wilkinson returned through the Under 18s, playing two games before earning an opportunity at Reserves level. He played six Reserves matches before making his League debut in Round 16, 2019 against Central District as player number 1761.

From there, Wilkinson became a regular at senior level, cementing his place in the side from 2020 as an exciting small forward capable of having a major impact on the scoreboard.

Speaking about his time at the club, Wilkinson said the decision to retire was a difficult one.

“I’ve been at the footy club for 13 years now, and I just feel like, at this point in my life, it’s the right time for me,” Wilkinson said.

“You boys especially, and all the people I’ve met along the way, are what have made me want to keep coming back to the club and spend every day here. I’ve loved coming to training and especially game day. I’ll miss every session and every moment I’ve spent with you guys.

“Thank you to all the coaches, staff and players who have been part of the journey. Let’s finish the year strongly. The future of the club is looking bright.”

South Adelaide General Manager Football Brent Reilly thanked Wilkinson for his service to the club.

“While it’s sad to see players hang up the boots, Shaker has been the barometer for the group over the past six years. His passion and care for the club and his teammates will be greatly missed.” Reilly said.

“We wish him, his partner and the rest of Shaker’s family all the best for the next stage of his life.”

Wilkinson will play his 116th and final Hostplus SANFL League game this weekend against West Adelaide, the same opponent he faced when celebrating his 100th League game a year ago.
