Vale Don Kimber
The South Adelaide Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Don Kimber.
Don played 130 games for the Panthers from 1953 to 1962 and duly received Life Membership. A newspaper at the time referred to Kimber as a “hefty follower” as he was South’s key ruckman.
It was a period where South didn’t play finals and he played under 8 different coaches in 10 years. Yet Kimber’s performances earnt him two State appearances. If not for persistent ankle injuries Kimber’s game total would have been more.
Don and his brother Bruce (player #961 who also played 30 games for the Panthers and sadly passed away earlier this year) weren’t keen on playing for South.
The brothers registered with false addresses putting them in the Sturt zone. After two seasons in the Sturt Colts their scheme was uncovered and they were rightfully transferred back to South.
Post football Don worked as a Chartered Accountant. He also served on the Club Committee and was the Honorary Auditor for 15 years.
In 2023 club great Peter Darley surprised the brother’s on Don’s 90th birthday presenting them with their past player hats.
The Club offers its condolences to Don’s children Alison, Catherine, Scott and Richard and their families.
