Vale Ian Day

1 July 2025

The South Adelaide Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ian “Daisy” Day — a premiership hero, club captain, life member, and SANFL Hall of Fame inductee.

Ian joined South Adelaide in 1961, seeking new opportunity after a strong career with West Adelaide. Over four seasons in the blue and white, he played 68 games, kicked 98 goals, and captained the club in 1963. A gifted half-forward and natural leader, Ian's skill, courage and football intelligence were instrumental in South’s historic 1964 premiership — the club’s most recent SANFL flag. That year, he led the club’s goalkicking, was best on ground in the preliminary final, rated third best in the Grand Final win over Port Adelaide, and — most memorably — kicked the sealing goal to secure the Panthers’ triumph.

While his on-field legacy was significant, Ian’s impact off the field was just as profound. Following his retirement, he served on the South Adelaide board from 1965 to 1967 and was awarded SANFL Life Membership in 1965.

Affectionately known as “Daisy,” Ian brought that same charisma and insight to the commentary box, becoming a pioneer of SANFL television coverage from 1965. Over three decades, he became one of South Australian football’s most respected and recognisable voices, working across Channels 7, 9 and the ABC. His wit, deep understanding of the game and straight-shooting style endeared him to generations of football fans.

Away from the football field, Ian was a true all-round sportsman. He played A-grade cricket and squash, held a scratch golf handicap at Kooyonga, and once shared the course record with Peter Thomson and American star Ed Oliver. His passion for sport extended into baseball, basketball and golf commentary — and even serving on boards for the Adelaide 36ers and the Adelaide Giants.

Ian’s immense contribution to South Australian sport was formally recognised in 2007 with induction into the SANFL Hall of Fame.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Ian’s family, friends, and former teammates. He was a proud Panther, a true gentleman of the game, and a much-loved figure in South Australian football.
