Vale John Cronin
John Cronin’s passing is a great loss to the South Adelaide Football Club and the wider community.
A life member since 1984, John was deeply involved with the club, serving on the Committee for many years and earning the affectionate title of Adelaide’s “Mr Movies” for his contributions to the film industry.
Former coach John Reid fondly remembers John as a “ripping bloke, who just got things done”, highlighting how his access to movies provided South Adelaide players and their partners with exclusive film screenings—creating unforgettable nights out.
Former player Peter McIntyre shared heartfelt memories of John’s generosity and unwavering support, recalling how interstate recruits were welcomed with midweek lamb roasts prepared by John’s wife, Maggie, at their home on Daly Street.
“Movie premiere tickets were always available, and John’s positive and supportive nature made him a cherished figure among players,” recalls Peter.
“His wicked sense of humor was legendary. During the club’s rebuilding phase under Reidy and Griffo, in the late 1980s, John, as the home ground PA announcer, would sometimes play the theme song from “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” as players ran through the banner.”
The South Adelaide Football Club extends its deepest condolences to John’s son, Paul, his family, and his many friends. His legacy as a passionate Panthers supporter and a beloved member of the community will be remembered with great respect.
