Vale John Griffen
The South Adelaide Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Life Member John Griffen.
After being diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in January, John passed away this morning, surrounded by family and friends.
John's impact on the South Adelaide community—and beyond—has been profound. A dedicated footballer, coach, fitness guru, teacher, mentor, and ambassador, he touched countless lives with his passion and generosity.
“John’s passions were football and people, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him is better for the experience.” said South Adelaide CEO Neill Sharpe.
“He was such an effervescent character. Even after his diagnosis, he remained remarkably positive, constantly praising the work of the medical professionals around him. He never wanted the focus to be on himself."
“Though he may have self-appointed himself as GSFL Ambassador, his efforts were instrumental in strengthening relationships with GSFL clubs and stakeholders in the South zone. He was a fierce advocate for local talent, championing players such as Ben Warren, Nathan Kreuger, and Sam Overall.”
“He was also passionate about female football and was extremely proud when his daughter Jaimi made her debut in the South Adelaide Women’s League team.”
John 'Griffo' Griffen’s journey with the Panthers began in 1970, when he played nine league games before being selected for National Service. He later returned as reserves coach under John Reid from 1988 to 1990. In 2004, he contributed to the development squads until 2005, then rejoined the Junior Pathway by coaching the U15 Country development squad from 2010 to 2014.
A steadfast advocate for the Southern Zone, Griffo was named GSFL Ambassador in 2010. His dedication to football was formally recognized in 2014 when he received a SANFL Award in honor of more than 30 years of coaching.
For his longstanding commitment to the Panthers and support of the game throughout the Southern Zone he was awarded South Adelaide Life Membership in 2018.
The South Adelaide Football Club offers its condolences to John’s daughters Catie and Jaimi and to his family and many friends.
John Griffen’s legacy is one of passion, commitment, and community. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
