The South Adelaide Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Brett Montgomery as its new senior coach for the next three seasons.

Montgomery brings extensive coaching experience to Magain Stadium, having held assistant coaching roles across Carlton, Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs.

In 2023, he joined the GWS GIANTS coaching panel under former Port Adelaide Premiership teammate Adam Kingsley, where he has spent the past four seasons.

Following the conclusion of the GIANTS’ 2026 AFL season, Montgomery made the decision to return to Adelaide, where his family had remained during his time in Sydney.

Prior to moving into coaching, Montgomery enjoyed a decorated AFL playing career, playing 204 games for Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs between 1997 and 2007.

A member of Port Adelaide’s 2004 AFL Premiership side, Montgomery won the John Cahill Medal as the Power’s Club Champion in 2000 and was named on the half back line in the 2002 All Australian team.

Montgomery said he was excited by the opportunity to lead South Adelaide and help build the Club’s next period of sustained success.

"I'm incredibly excited. It’s a fantastic opportunity and one I’ve been interested in for quite some time. Coming home to Adelaide, where my family is, having the chance to coach my own senior team and joining a footy club with so much ambition made it a really strong fit." said Montgomery

"From the outset, I felt a strong connection with the people at the club and it was clear our values aligned. There were a lot of similarities in our stories and I could quickly see how the fit could work."

"Coming home to Adelaide was obviously an important part of it, and after speaking with Neill, Brent and Geoff, the decision became a pretty straightforward one."

"I think people want to feel something when they come to the footy, whether they’re a player getting ready for training or a supporter heading to a game."

"We want to play with energy, enthusiasm and a real sense of purpose. It needs to be a style the players are passionate about and one our supporters enjoy watching."

"That doesn’t mean being reckless, there still has to be responsibility and discipline, but I think the best teams play with spirit and excitement, and that’s something we want to bring."

South Adelaide President Geoff Baynes said the Club was thrilled to secure a coach of Montgomery’s experience and calibre.
