In 2017 the SANFL held a Women's Football competition consisting of 4 clubs. After missing out on a team, South Adelaide were granted a licence in June 2017 to compete in the 2018 SANFLW season. After building a strong junior Female Football program, the Panthers were expected to hit the ground running. Krissie Steen was selected as the inaugural coach thanks to her experience at AFL and local level. Along side the new coach, Lauren Buchanan and Kristi Harvey were named as the first ever captians of the Women's team

On February 2nd, 2018 history was made as the first ever South Adelaide Senior Women's team took to Flinders University Stadium against Glenelg. The Panthers would win by 28-points.

South Adelaide would show some outstanding form throughout the 10 game season, only losing one game against North Adelaide.

With a top 3 finals set-up, the Panthers finished top and booked a place in the Grand Final on ANZAC Day at Peter Motley Oval. After a 19-day break for South Adelaide, they faced off against Norwood, who won the inaugural SANFLW Premiership in 2017.

In what was a fierce battle, the Panthers took the Premiership Cup to Noarlunga after holding off a late charge by the Redlegs by just 5-points.

Cheyenne Hammond was awarded the Best on Ground Medal after an outstanding performance in helping getting the girls over the line. Adelaide Crows AFLW draftee Nikki Gore won the first Senior Women's Best and Fairest Medal.

After a history making first season, the Panthers would have a large amount of player turnover, which also included their coach moving into the AFLW system.

However, Rick Watts would step into the role after working under Krissie Steen for a number of years. In 2018, South Adelaide's Junior Girls program again showcased their talent, with 8 Under-17s coming into the senior side along with new recruit Nicole Campbell. Lauren Buchanan would continue on as a solo captain.

The Panther Cubs produced another solid season, finishing second at the end of the home and away season, having loss just two games.

In the Second Semi Final, it was a 2018 Grand Final rematch as South Adelaide were up against the red hot favorites in Norwood. However, the Panthers would produce some of their best football of the year and produce a stunning upset to advance to their second convective Grand Final.

Two weeks later, South Adelaide was joined by North Adelaide at Glenelg Oval for the Grand Final. On a very wet day, the Panthers off the back of Indy Tahau, who was named Best on Ground thanks to her two important goals, controlled the game from the first bounce to claim their Second Women's Premiership, and to become the first team to win back to back Women's Premierships. The following week Czenya Cavouras would be named the 2019 SAFCW Best and Fairest player.

Redemption Realised: Panthers Rise to 2024 Premiership Glory

On the biggest stage, with everything on the line, South Adelaide delivered a performance defined by resilience, pressure, and belief—overcoming Norwood to secure the 2024 premiership and their third flag in six seasons.

From the opening bounce, the tone was set. The contest was fierce, every possession hard-earned, and the pressure relentless. It was Melissa Anderson who broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion, launching a running goal from 50 metres to ignite the Panthers and give them an early edge.

The second quarter showcased South’s system at its best. A disciplined and determined backline restricted Norwood to just a single point for the half, while Shae Archbold and Lauren Clifton capitalised forward to extend the lead to 18 points at the main break. It was a statement of control, built on structure and accountability across the ground.

As expected in a Grand Final, momentum shifted after half-time. Norwood tightened the contest, limiting South’s forward entries and testing their defensive resolve. But the Panthers stood tall. Their ability to absorb pressure and minimise damage ensured they carried an 11-point buffer into the final term.

The last quarter demanded grit—and the Panthers responded. With the game on the line, Caitlin Couch led from the front with relentless defensive pressure, while the team held firm despite a late Norwood surge. Their early scoreboard advantage proved decisive, sealing a hard-fought and deserved victory.

What changed was South Adelaide’s defensive resilience and commitment to pressure across all four quarters. It mattered because it turned a high-pressure contest into a controlled, winnable game. For members, it’s a blueprint—pressure, discipline, and trust in the system win premierships.

Led by best-on-ground Jordann Hickey, the Panthers didn’t just win—they answered the call. And now, with belief surging, the foundation is set for another tilt at back-to-back success.

Back-to-Back Glory: Panthers Deliver on the Big Stage

South Adelaide has once again stamped its authority on the SANFLW competition, securing a composed and commanding 23-point Grand Final victory over Woodville-West Torrens at Stratarama Stadium. In front of a passionate crowd nearing 3,000, the Panthers delivered a performance that was as clinical as it was relentless—claiming their fourth premiership and second consecutive title.

From the opening bounce, South’s intent was unmistakable. Their pressure around the contest and inside forward 50 set the tone early, forcing errors and capitalising through disciplined ball movement. Early goals to Lucy Northcott and Laquoiya Cockatoo-Motlap rewarded that intensity, while Emma Charlton’s dominance at stoppages ensured the Panthers controlled territory.

The second quarter became a test of resilience, but South’s composure held firm. Their ability to transition quickly from defence to attack stretched the Eagles, with Emily Brockhurst’s running goal a standout moment. By half-time, a 22-point lead reflected not just scoreboard pressure, but complete control of the contest.

The premiership quarter proved decisive. South tightened its grip through relentless forward pressure and smart decision-making, with Hope Taylor’s clutch set shot extending the margin and breaking the Eagles’ resistance. From there, the Panthers never looked back.

What changed was South Adelaide’s ability to execute under pressure—clean hands, disciplined structures, and unwavering belief. It mattered because it reinforced their status as the competition benchmark, a team built not just on talent, but consistency and system.

For members, this victory is more than a result—it’s a blueprint. It highlights the value of pressure, connection, and trust in the game plan. With emerging talent like best-on-ground Emma Charlton leading the way, the future remains as bright as the present.

The Panthers aren’t just winning premierships—they’re building a legacy.
