BETTA Team Selection: SANFLW Grand Final v Eagles
Chasing their fourth SANFLW Premiership in what will be a record sixth Grand Final appearance, the Panthers are set to face the Eagles in a match that could make history.
The two sides have already met three times in 2025. The Panthers handed the Eagles their first defeat of the season in Round 9, but the Eagles bounced back in Round 14 with an eight-point win that secured them their first Minor Premiership.
In the Second Semi Final, which served as a preview of this weekend’s showdown, the Eagles edged out a one-point victory to book their spot in their first ever Hostplus SANFLW Grand Final.
The Panthers, meanwhile, responded strongly by overpowering Sturt in the Preliminary Final. They surged into the decider after a dominant forty-five point win over the Double Blues last Sunday.
Throughout the season, the Panthers have used more players than any other club in the competition, with 36 players taking the field. In contrast, the Eagles have fielded the fewest with 30.
Speaking to the SANFL's Zac Milbank, Panthers Senior Coach Rick Watts said the group had drawn confidence from last weekend's performance and were embracing the role of underdogs once again.
"I think the loss could work to our advantage," Watts said. "We enjoy the challenge and often play our best footy when we are seen as the underdog."
Ahead of the Grand Final, the Panthers will be forced to make one change. Exciting forward Shae Archbold has been ruled out after scans confirmed an ACL rupture in her right knee.
Senior Coach Rick Watts expressed his heartbreak for Archbold.
"This is her second ACL in three years. Our hearts go out to her," he said. "We will be playing for her on Sunday and aiming to make her proud."
At Monday night's SANFLW Best and Fairest Awards, both the Panthers and Eagles had the equal highest number of players named in The Advertiser Team of the Year.
Young talents Emma Charlton and Taya Maxwell earned spots on the interchange bench. Jaslynne Smith, the club's and League's games record holder, was named in the back pocket, Vice Captain Tiffany King at centre half back, and star ruck Soriah Moon was selected as the starting ruck.
The club congratulates these players along with all other award recipients from the evening.
The Grand Final gets underway at 2:15 pm at Stratarama Stadium in Glenelg. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online or at the gate.
For those unable to attend, the game will be broadcast live and free on Channel 7 and 7Plus, and also streamed via SANFL now. Use code SAFCFAN2025 at checkout to receive ten percent off and show your support for the Panthers.
The match will also be called live on 1629 SEN SA and available through the SEN App.
