BETTA Team Selection: SANFL Round 4 v Centrals
Following a disappointing loss to the Redlegs on Friday night, the Panthers return from an extended break to take on Centrals in an ANZAC Weekend clash on Sunday afternoon.
South Adelaide has been dealt another blow, with skipper Oscar Clavarino ruled out for up to six weeks with a hamstring strain.
His absence opens the door for Luke Bogle, Charlie Duncan, Elliot Dunkin, Sam Foley, Corey Grocock and Lachy Scott, who have all been named in the extended squad.
Sunday will also see the Panthers host the Mayor’s Cup for the third consecutive year.
The Mayor’s Cup was introduced in 2004, with South Adelaide and Central District recognising their respective communities, the City of Onkaparinga and the City of Playford. Both regions share similar geography, demographics and challenges across the local community and the South Australian football landscape.
The Panthers will also present the Frank Barry Medal, introduced in 2019. The medal is awarded to the South Adelaide player whose performance best reflects the qualities of skill, courage in adversity, self sacrifice, teamwork and fair play that embody the ANZAC spirit.
The medal is named after South Adelaide’s first Magarey Medallist, Frank “Dinky” Barry, who was recognised as the competition’s fairest and most brilliant player in 1915.
A brilliant rover, Barry was known for his strong marking, composure, precision by hand and foot, and his ability to run and baulk.
He later served in World War I, embarking with the First AIF to serve in France. Upon departing, he was quoted as saying, “I hope to do as well at Gallipoli as on the football field, and if VCs are about, I will be a trier”.
Barry endured the harsh conditions of the Western Front and rose to the rank of second lieutenant. During his service he contracted trench foot, requiring periods in hospital. Although he survived the war, complications with his foot meant he was unable to return to football.
Meanwhile, the Reserves will also face the Bulldogs and will be looking to return to the winners list after last week’s heartbreaking loss to the Redlegs.
Back at Magain Stadium, there will be plenty for the whole family to enjoy, including a jumping castle, inflatable shark course and the popular Katch Kingston thanks to Villis Family Bakery.
Past players and officials will also gather for their annual Past Players Day at the hut on the hill, with tickets available that include entry to the match.
All the action gets underway from 10:30 am with the Reserves, followed by the League at 1:10 pm on Sunday afternoon.
