Roosters Kick Away in Final Term to Defeat Panthers by 59 Points

A dominant seven-goal final term saw North Adelaide pull away to defeat South Adelaide by 59 points at Prospect Oval.

South nearly made the perfect start, with Kody Shortridge running onto a Kodah Edwards centre clearance and narrowly missing a shot within the opening 30 seconds.

Despite the heavy conditions underfoot, both sides managed to move the ball with good pace.

While it wasn't always pretty, North Adelaide moved the ball quickly and directly, securing the opening goal through Armani-Jacom Scullino.

A clever gather and handball from the ruck contest by Harry Wadewitz set up a golden scoring chance, with Shortridge finding Callan Hart, who snapped accurately from long range.

Two goals in as many minutes extended North Adelaide’s lead to 10 points, but the home side wasn’t finished.

Apart from a difficult dribbling effort from Hudson Voigt that was rushed through for a behind, the Roosters held all the momentum, adding a fourth goal late in the term.

In defence, Elijah Koop and Jackson Collins showed plenty of desperation, while Brady McDonald continued to demonstrate his rebounding ability.

At quarter time, North Adelaide held a solid 15-point lead.

Looking for a spark in the second term, underage talent Zemes Pilot broke out the back of a contest, shrugged off a tackler and slotted his first goal at Under-18 level to narrow the gap.

With several players caked in mud, supporters could barely make out the guernsey numbers. Both teams adapted to the conditions, opting for long, direct play.

Ben Dittmar had a chance to cut the deficit to five points, but his hurried shot after being called to play on drifted wide.

Tom Simpson and Kodah Edwards continued to win the ball in tight, but North Adelaide regained the momentum. Back-to-back goals re-established a comfortable lead.

Following a lively first half, Gabriel Caudle-Simes kept South within reach with a brilliant long-range set shot from a tight angle.

At the main break, North Adelaide led by 18 points—though the contest felt closer than the scoreboard suggested.

Patrick Carman brought energy early in the third quarter, converting a set shot from just inside 50 after winning a free kick for high contact.

North Adelaide responded with the next two majors, but South continued to press.

Jake Wigzell and Kai Clark injected energy off half-back, while Max Savage worked tirelessly in the ruck to give his midfielders first use.

Needing a goal to stay in touch, Harrison Davey intercepted and launched a promising attack down the wing, ending with Pilot taking a strong overhead mark and converting from close range.

Pilot’s second would be the final goal of the quarter, leaving South Adelaide needing to overturn a 22-point deficit in the final term to pull off a comeback.

South started the last quarter brightly, with Edwards hitting a leading Wadewitz, who converted within the opening minute to reduce the margin to 16 points.

Unfortunately for South, that would be as close as they came. Two quick goals from North Adelaide stretched the margin back out to five goals, and from there, the Roosters took control.

Cameron Woods continued to bring pressure around the contest and used his long kicking to advantage.

Two more goals sealed the result, though Wadewitz’s second of the quarter gave South a late moment of joy.

Despite a competitive showing for much of the match, North Adelaide’s class shone through in the closing stages. Four goals in the final six minutes blew the margin out to a game-high 59 points.

As the final siren sounded, the Roosters’ seven-goal final term proved the difference. South Adelaide showed promising patches, but couldn’t sustain the effort for long enough to challenge.

South Adelaide will aim to return to the winners’ list when they face Central District at Magain Stadium on Sunday, 6 July at 1:20pm.

Panthers Outclassed by Roosters in 53-point Loss

North Adelaide led from start to finish to record a commanding 53-point victory over South Adelaide at Prospect Oval.

A minor score in the opening minute got the Roosters on the board, and a goal soon followed to give them a bright start.

Caleb Hyland once again led the way around the contest, using his positioning and strength to win several clearances and disrupt North’s ball movement with strong tackling pressure.

South Adelaide was rewarded for its early effort midway through the first term when Tom Meaney marked a quick entry from Tyler Harris. Meaney made no mistake with his close-range set shot.

Unfortunately, it would be South’s only score for the quarter, as North Adelaide extended its lead to 15 points at the first break.

The Roosters continued their momentum early in the second term, kicking the first two goals to further increase their buffer.

Hudson Boal led by example at the coalface, winning multiple contested possessions and releasing South’s outside runners with clean hands.

The run and carry of Jayce Potter provided plenty of rebound from half-back, with his foot skills helping to launch several promising forward attacks.

South eventually found reward for effort when Boal courageously went back with the flight to take a mark under pressure. His accurate set shot reduced the deficit to 21 points.

The game then turned into a tight arm-wrestle, with both sides creating chances. It was South Adelaide who kicked the next important major.

Bailey James used his precision by foot to find Boal inside 50. Boal quickly turned and found Robert Jones, who converted his set shot to cap off a competitive quarter for the visitors.

At the main break, North Adelaide held a 17-point lead.

Just when South looked to be closing the gap, North responded swiftly - kicking the first goal of the third term within minutes.

South needed to make the most of every opportunity, but Kyan Kemp-Laundy’s long-range set shot drifted wide. North made them pay, going coast-to-coast to land a cruel blow.

Despite struggling to break through North’s defensive structure, South continued to apply desperate pressure, hoping to force turnovers in dangerous areas.

Nathan Flesfadar played a key role linking up forward of centre, often tasked with delivering the ball inside 50.

The class and composure of Darcy Campbell-Kearney shone at times, but North Adelaide’s backline remained disciplined, denying time and space to the clever ball-user.

A third goal for the Roosters late in the term pushed their lead to a game-high 35 points, leaving South with a mountain to climb in the final quarter.

South needed the opening goal of the last term to spark any chance of a comeback, but North quickly extinguished those hopes by scoring within the first minute.

Riley Watchman and Reilly Weidenhofer stood tall under constant pressure, fighting hard to halve contests and slow North’s attacking momentum.

Some quick ball movement along the wing allowed South to break through North’s structure, with Potter spotting Dale Shearer on the lead.

Shearer wasted no time, passing to Kemp-Laundy 25 metres out on a slight angle. However, the forward was unable to convert the set shot.

The miss proved inconsequential moments later when Jones took an intercept mark and sent the ball long to a pack. The umpire penalised North for an infringement on Shearer in the contest, and he converted his set shot to provide a rare goal for South.

North Adelaide refused to take their foot off the pedal, though inaccuracy—two goals and four behinds—kept the margin from blowing out further.

Hudson Croser’s strong contested mark in the goal square gave South a final highlight, as the ruckman converted from point-blank range to close the match.

At the final siren, North Adelaide had simply been too strong, running out convincing 53-point winners over a gallant South Adelaide.

South Adelaide will be looking to bounce back when they face ladder-leaders Central District at Magain Stadium on Sunday, 6 July at 11:00am.
