U16 & U18 Match Report: Round 17 @ Central District

15 August 2022

Clean Sweep Saturday: South Adelaide Juniors made it 2 from 2 during their matches against Central District at X Convenience Oval on Saturday.

Enjoying a successful trip to the Ponderosa, the Panther Under-16s started the day with a 38-point win, 8.8 (56) to 2.6 (18). Before the Panther Under-18s then finished strong with a 51-point, 14.10 (94) to 6.7 (43).

Yet despite the final margin, it took some time for Panther Under-16s to ground down their most distant opponent.

Only a single goal was scored during the first half – which went the way of the Panthers. But the blue and white's defensive strength was certainly on display as they held the Dogs to just 3 points for a half.

However, the Panthers then kicked away after the main break with 7 goals to 2 – including 4 straight in the final term of which 3 were kicked by Dakota Sterzl.

Also impressive in this low-scoring battle was Phoenix Hargrave, who had 34 disposals and 16 marks. Blake Florance was also lively with 23 disposals, 11 marks, and 7 tackles, while Cohen Shortridge had 23 disposals and 10 marks.

Then following the under-16s hard-fought but convincing win, the Panther Under-18s took to the field and from the first siren – they looked determined to win.

They booted 3 unanswered goals during the opening term while conceding just a behind. They then further strengthened their lead during the second term to lead by 28 points at halftime, 7.6 (48) to 3.2 (20).

However, not resting on their laurels, the Panthers stormed home after halftime by kicking 7 goals and conceding just 3 – which helped produce an impressive 51-point victory, 14.10 (94) to 6.7 (43).

This strong under-18s win came with many key contributors. Will Verrall had 36 hit-outs, 21 disposals, and 9 clearances. While Jaiden Magor had 13 touches and 5 goals, and Jye Bottroff collected 17 disposals, 7 marks, and a goal.

And the South Adelaide Juniors will look to carry this fine form into their next games which will be against the Eagles at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval on Saturday, 20 August. The under-16s will start at 11:00am, and the under-18s follow on from 1:15pm.
